A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
