Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then located multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report initial examinations indicate the substance was probably human blood.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.

City officials stated they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for details.

A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism made him speechless and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
