The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
