Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
